What If … …Sports cut some corners?

THE BEST PLAYERS in the world deserve to play on the least forgiving fields. No one wants to see Scottie Scheffler sink three-foot putts past a miniature windmill, or Giannis Antetokounmpo dunk on a Fisher Price hoop. Yet, despite the enormity of modern arenas, there remain soft spots, paths of least resistance. While Steph Curry drops treys from the moon, other guys park in the corners and make their livings shooting the shortest possible threes. It’s even worse in baseball’s irregularly shaped parks. Yankee Stadium has a famously short porch in right field (314 feet from home) where lefties love to launch homers that would be outs anywhere else.
