Achieving A Noble Goal

LUDWIG GUTTMANN HAD a dream. A doctor working in England during and after World War II, he treated several former pilots who had suffered spinal injuries while serving in the British Armed Forces. Guttmann wanted the men to feel that even though they were in wheelchairs, they could still do things—like compete in sports—they enjoyed before their injuries. So in 1948 he held an archery competition for 16 patients. He chose a date that coincided with the London Olympics. “It was a demonstration to the public that…even those with a disablement of such magnitude of spinal paraplegia, can become sportsmen and women in their own right,” he wrote.
