WHEN YOU you look at that picture of the surfer to the left, it’s unlikely the first thing that pops into your head is Paris! And with good reason: That’s Tahiti. Paris is located 100 miles inland. Surfing on the Seine River is hardly an option, so Olympic officials had to look elsewhere. They settled on a place with a connection to the host country: Tahiti is in French Polynesia, a collection of islands in the South Pacific that is a territory of France. The village of Teahupo’o is known for its massive waves, so the competition should be intense. So is getting there from Paris. In 2020 a flight from Tahiti to France set the record for the longest domestic flight, at more than 16 hours.…
