ONE OF two new sports, breaking is certain to draw plenty of attention in Paris. (Despite the fact that it’s a dancing competition, it’s known as simply breaking, not break dancing.) Competitors go head-to-head in a series of “throw downs,” with judges picking who advances. The athletes are known as B-Boys and B-Girls (the B stands for breaker). They show off their moves to music played and chosen by a DJ. That’s unlike, say, the gymnastics floor exercise, where the competitor picks their own tune. Breakers, such as 2023 world champ Victor Montalvo (below)—aka B-Boy Victor—have to be able to improvise and think on their feet. Or their heads, which are just as likely to be on the floor.…
