YOU CAN’T blame Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone for toying with the idea of adding a new event to her repertoire. Though she’s only 24, she’ll be competing in the 400-meter hurdles at her third Games. In 2016 she became the youngest athlete to qualify for the U.S. track team since 1972. After winning gold in Tokyo, McLaughlin-Levrone considered adding the flat 400 meters to her schedule but ultimately decided against it. She wanted to stay focused.
