SUE DALLY, 61, from Devon, shares how painting has boosted her confidence after illness

Excitement coursed through me as I laid out my new set of coloured pencils on the table and got my sketchpad ready. I cleared my thoughts and allowed myself to fully focus on the task at hand, drawing a cat’s eye. Lost in the moment, I blended colour after colour to bring the creature’s features to life. I wasn’t alone. As I gazed at my computer screen, I could see my Zoom classmates drawing along too, and hear the reassuring words of our teacher, Bonny Snowdon. ‘Keep blending. Now make the eyes come to life,’ she encouraged. It was so lovely to feel excited about something again. After an operation to remove a neck disc and fix nerve damage to my right arm in 2015, I’d been having a tough time. Recovery was slow…
