Try it now! In recent years, it’s become trendy to burn white sage and do smudging, where smoke is fanned around a person or room, to cleanse that person or space. Smudging is part of a much larger sacred ceremony – usually only performed by indigenous people – and out of respect for indigenous communities, many people are now refraining from using white sage and the term ‘smudging’. Instead, it’s seen as more respectful to opt for the term‘smoke cleansing’ and to burn alternative herbs such as rosemary, lavender, and juniper that are more native to the practitioner.
