Alexandrite A variety of chrysoberyl, this colourchanging crystal is another traditional June birthstone, and considered quite rare. Legend has it that it was discovered in the 19th century by emerald miners in Russia on the day the future czar Alexander II came of age, and so was named after him. Alexandrite is often described as ‘emerald by day, ruby by night’ as it changes colour depending on the light source.
