Poor sleep makes us selfish

A kind act just for the sake of it is one of the most touching things a human can do, but sometimes our generosity of spirit gets lost in the stresses and strains of everyday life. Interestingly, new research indicates our level of kindness could be linked to our sleep routine. Scientists at the University of California have linked a lack of sleep with reduced social interactions, making people less willing to help others. They found MRI scans of people who are sleep-deprived reveal reduced activation in the empathy parts of the brain, which dents our natural compassion. Furthermore, charitable giving was even shown to drop by 10 per cent after the start of US Daylight Saving Time when the clocks go forwards, depriving us of an hour of sleep.…
