When doctor Jude Galea took her medical skills to patients in far-flung places, her eyes were opened to a whole new purpose

As the young guy with sun-bleached hair, wearing a wetsuit, walked through the doors of the emergency room, I had a pretty good idea what he was in for… Another day, another surfer with a dislocated shoulder. Apart from surfers’ sporting injuries, my patients tended to be typical of an emergency unit anywhere in the world – heart attacks, pneumonia, diabetes complications. But that was where the comparison between my previous job working at a Scottish hospital, and my current one in a little beachside hospital in Australia, ended.
