In the Lord of the Rings series, the ring itself is a symbol. In the Harry Potter series, Harry’s scar is a symbol. These motifs are conjured up again and again throughout the books and films, bringing significance to something otherwise benign. There’s nothing particularly special about a ring or a scar. But it’s the meaning behind the symbols that make them what they are – symbolic! The tarot deck also displays symbols.
