I truly believe fate was whispering in my ear from the moment I was born. By rights, I shouldn’t have lived. Complications at birth meant my brain had been starved of oxygen, and this was back in 1982, when survival rates for sick babies were much lower. But even though I don’t remember it, I think deep down there was a power within me that told me to fight – and I’ve been tapping into that power ever since. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and my mum, Eileen, and Nanny Alice were warned by the doctors that I’d never learn to walk or talk.
