De-stress solution The stress and gut health relationship is something of a paradox. When you’re in a high-stress state, or ‘fight and flight’ mode, your body increases the blood supply to your muscles and heart and reduces the supply to your gut. The digestive juices get repressed and the surge in stress hormones can either shut digestion down or speed it up. On the flipside, a poorly functioning gut can worsen your stress levels. So how do you soothe and destress your gut? You can start with deep belly breathing. Take three long, slow breaths in and out, focusing attention on the anxiety or discomfort in your gut.
