Jimnez admires Neruda and patiently hopes that one day the poet might dedicate a book to him, or at least have more than a short exchange of words and a small tip. His longing is finally rewarded and the two strike up a peculiar relationship. However, the strained atmosphere in Chile during those years brings about a dramatic dnouement.
