This is the BBC, calling the world from – well, in this case, Harbeth’s headquarters in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Harbeth was founded in 1977 by Hugh Dudley Harwood, who had worked in the BBC’s Research Department (Engineering Division) for nearly 20 years and was instrumental in the design and development of many loudspeakers for the BBC, including the famous LS3/5 and LS 3/5A broadcast monitors, the commercial sale of which the BBC subsequently licensed to various famous British speaker manufacturers, including KEF and Rogers. While at the Beeb, Harwood patented (in his own name) the use of polypropylene as a cone material, and it was to commercialise this discovery that Harbeth was founded, and the original HL1 produced.
