The KEF R3 is a rare three-way standmounter – there is only one other in this entire group. It doesn’t, however, look like a three-way, because its tweeter and midrange co-inhabit the top space, in the form of the distinctive Uni-Q driver array, an arrangement KEF has used and refined since the late 1980s. The R3 uses the 12th iteration, with a 25mm aluminium-dome tweeter within a 12.5cm aluminium midrange unit. While this version of the Uni-Q brought with it a host of detail refinements to the motor assembly, suspension and drive unit structure – reducing distortion and improving performance over earlier versions – the R3 hasn’t yet been gifted the ‘Meta’ frequency-absorbing puck behind the tweeter, the advantages of which we heard from the LS50 Meta a few pages…
