From a historical and sociocultural perspective, the author seeks to understand the processes of creation and evolution of Shotokan Karate-Dō, a martial art whose conception takes place in the Ryukyu archipelago and matures in Tokyo, from where it spreads to the world. Emerged as an art of resistance and, with the socio-political development of Japan, Karate-Dō became more than a fighting, also emerging as an educational means and sport.
