Physics genius Stephen Hawking was given only two years to live when he was just 21 years old. He defied the odds, stopping time both for his illness, and for the forces governing the formation of the universe.

The neurological disorder ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), formerly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, struck the young Stephen Hawking early. As his body deteriorated, he soon required a wheelchair – but his brain continued working overtime.
