Inside Miguel’s Political Awakening

On the scene as the R&B singer visits a private facility where immigrants are detained for years

ON A DESERT ROAD NORTH OF L.A. in October, Miguel stands across from the Adelanto Detention Facility, home to nearly 2,000 federal immigration detainees awaiting deportation or hearings about their status in the U.S. The private, for-profit detention centre has been plagued by accusations of sexual assault by guards; three inmates have died there in the past year – not to mention multiple hunger strikes and suicide attempts. (“Our company strongly refutes these allegations,” says a representative for the facility.)
