Fictional Grandson of historical Vicente de Rocamora, Dutch cavalry Captain Jacob Moses De Rocamora serves with Protestant married first cousins William's and Mary's Glorious Revolution. Mary's Catholic father and William's uncle James II escapes to France and exile. They reward Jacob with knighthood for his heroism. Barbadian laws prevent Rocamora from freeing them.Back in London, Rocamora and Queen Mary are attracted to each other. She pressures Rocamora to wed a young wealthy and aristocratic ward of the Crown. She raises him to Count of the Palace and eligible for a seat in The House of Lords before smallpox kills her.Rocamora obtains a rare divorce. He keeps his daughter and one of their male twins. Rocamora invests with merchants and bankers and becomes one of the wealthiest men in England. He weds a woman who applies to be Governess for his daughter and son. She gives birth to three more. King William auctions titles and land to acquire money for his war against France. Rocamora bids high and wins the title of Duke with property in DevonWilliam III and Mary's sister Queen Anne die childless. Against backgrounds of The Act of Succession, Act of Union, and South Sea Bubble, Rocamora participates in Parliament's search for a Protestant Stuart to be their next monarch. Rocamora's life and second marriage are harmonious. His children wed well except for his eldest son, whose ambitious childless wife schemes to ensure her husband will be heir to Rocamora's title and wealth and threatens to divide his family.
