IT’S EASY ENOUGH to see how the Porsche 935/78 might have picked up its nickname, “Moby Dick.” Imagine the big lug without the Martini sponsorship—just a massive white body with a comically stretched rear, capped by whale flukes. The 935/78 was the most extreme extension of the 911 ever raced. Only the upright windshield looks even remotely related to the 911 Turbo road car on which it was ostensibly based. The rest is pure insanity. It looks like a prototype racer with a 911 popping out of the top. It achieved an impressive 0.36 drag coefficient, and in practice for the 1978 Le Mans race, it touched 227 mph on the Mulsanne (although it managed only 222 mph in the race).
