OF ALL THE GOOFY, adorable Le Mans specials to come from French teams (and there were several), the ’64 Panhard CD LM64 is the goofiest and most adorable. It was also the most impressive. With fins standing tall above its low tail and a smooth body enclosing its wheels, the LM64 looks like a kindhearted cartoon dolphin. Its supercharged 848-cc engine made less than 80 hp, but this little runt reached 143 mph on the Mulsanne. That’s made possible by a stunningly low 0.12 drag coefficient. It was designed at the Gustave Eiffel aerodynamics laboratory by Charles Deutsch, who pops up so frequently in the history of Le Mans that he’s sort of a Forrest Gump of French aerodynamics engineers.
