I remember, vividly, visiting a country house on a school trip and marvelling at the grandest library I had ever seen. Rows upon rows of books stretched up the walls like intellectual ivy, framed by lush, mahogany shelves and multiple ladders, as high, it seemed to me then, as Jack’s beanstalk. Outside it was a bright, sunny day – the light streamed through the windows – but even so, I had to pull myself away from the room. It was a church of reading.
