Embarrassment? BRING IT ON!

They might make us cringe, but awkward moments can help us find a sense of joy in the sheer absurdity of being human, says Melissa Dahl

THERE IS A MEMORY THAT, FOR A TIME, MY MIND REPLAYED HOURLY. I was sitting on a couch in my boss’s office, waiting for her to arrive so we could begin our scheduled meeting. Unbeknown to me, my bottom was planted firmly on to a corner of her winter coat. When she entered her office, she fixed her eyes on me – and my bottom and her expensive coat under it – and yanked the garment free like a magician pulling off a tablecloth. (In this analogy, my bottom plays the part of the table setting.) She never said a word, but I intuited the message.
