Getting to Know Users

You might think you’re the only person using your Raspberry Pi but there are several different users and even groups of users. Your main account is normally called Pi and there is an account above it called root, which is more powerful. You can also create users and groups.

WHAT IS A USER? An important part of using Linux is the concept of users and understanding which user you are and which group you belong to. Like all modern computers, you can have multiple user accounts with each having different levels of access. STEP 1 The first thing you need to do is get a concept of which user you are. Enter: whoami into the command line and press return. It should say “pi” (unless you set up your account name differently during setup). The “whoami” command might seem a bit simplistic, but it comes in very handy sometimes.
