Budget approval for completion of full Oxford-Cambridge line

Opinion Industry Insider THE East West Rail plan to restore services between Oxford and Cambridge received approval in the Budget announced on October 30. This followed a significant landmark with the start of trial operations between Oxford and Milton Keynes using new infrastructure between Bicester and Bletchley, where the full line speed of 100mph was recorded (RAIL 1021). Through services were withdrawn in 1968. But elements of the route were retained, with a passenger service between Bedford and Bletchley which has continued to the current day, although the line from Bedford to Cambridge via Sandy was closed to all traffic. A passenger timetable was also retained between Bicester and Oxford until 1967. A number of freight flows continued to use part of the route, including stone trains from Whatley to Wolverton.…
