WHEN it comes to major national issues, consensus among political parties is not as rare as one might think. On running our railways, there is actually similarity in the thinking of the Labour movement and its Conservative opposition, and both seem destined to move closer as we move through the decade. There is already agreement that wholesale expansion of the network to ‘reverse Beeching’ has always been a non-starter. Labour’s immediate cancellation of the Restoring Your Railway scheme was expected, as it was famously underfunded when the previous government launched it some five years ago. For its part, the Conservatives also ditched the northern and Midlands legs of HS2, and Labour has made it clear that it has no intention of reversing that decision. It has also fully signed up…
