Cambrian crash: sanding hoses blocked on TfW ‘158’

AUTOMATIC sanders on the Class 158 that slid into an oncoming train on the Cambrian Line last month were blocked, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has found. A preliminary report from investigators has discovered that the wheels on the 1831 Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth (1J25) started sliding when the driver applied the brake to stop in the loop at Talerddig, on October 21. The slide then continued as the Class 158 headed down the 1-in-56 gradient until it collided with the 1909 Machynlleth-Shrewsbury (1S71) at 1926. Both trains were operated by Transport for Wales. One passenger died afterwards, and four other people were seriously hurt, while 11 more needed hospital treatment for their injuries.
