Class 93: a new era of green locomotives

The last new locomotive designs to be delivered for use in the UK were the Class 68 diesel in August 2014, and the similar looking Class 88 electro-diesel in January 2017. Both were ordered by Direct Rail Services and were designed by Vossloh. The latter was then taken over by Stadler, which built most of the locomotives at its plant in Valencia. But in 2021, Rail Operations Group (now owned by Star Capital) placed an order for ten Class 93 tri-mode Bo-Bo machines, with an option for another 20 locomotives. This locomotive is designed from the same platform as the ‘88’, but has many changes - not least of all the cabs which, while bearing some similarities, are most definitely different.
