More than half of all journeys on London’s Northern City Line, between Finsbury Park and Moorgate, are now made using European Train Control System (ETCS) cab signalling technology, instead of lineside signals.
And the number is set to steadily increase as more drivers are trained in the new technology.
Under ETCS, drivers are continually fed a safe target speed to aim for, on a computer screen in their cab. This enables trains to run closer together, giving a more consistent and reliable service.
The first passenger train ran to the City of London using digital signalling technology in November 2023. Since then, Govia Thameslink Railway has been training its Great Northern drivers to use the system.
