The viaduct that cuts through Todmorden might have been designed by George Stephenson… but this picture illustrates a modern railway story. Northern 156455 is about to call at Todmorden station, just out of sight to the left of the picture, which was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1841. It has only just left Stansfield Hall Junction, and with it a curve that carried its first services in 2015. That was after a Network Rail project to reinstate the ‘missing’ side of a triangle, which since its removal by BR in 1972 had prevented trains from running here directly between Manchester and Burnley.
