Reclusive Beefheart guitarist beams down for his very first solo album. Under the alias Antennae Jimmy Semens, Jeff Cotton played guitar and lap steel on Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica. Later he joined his former Exiles bandmate Merrell Fankhauser in psych unit Mu, but by 1975 he’d quit the industry, found a new life in a Christian ministry, and these days resides in Hawaii. Given that he’s had so long to write this material, perhaps it’s no surprise that Cotton’s first solo album is a baggy, rambling curio. The Fantasy Of Reality’s 22 tracks run to over 65 minutes, and some of them are eminently expungeable (the caterwauling The Season Of Awakening; Heavy, with ill-judged Delta blues ‘character’ vocal).
