A Kinder Surprise of an album from head-spinning US collective. There’s little about The Egg That Never Opened that isn’t challenging, convoluted and/or distinctly bizarre. This Colorado-based project’s debut takes a posthumously published Philip K Dick novella – Radio Free Albemuth, about a dystopian future where a corrupt populist president holds sway – as its conceptual jumping-off point. Musically, it shoehorns innumerable styles into its 40 minutes. Spaced-out 60s surf rock rubs shoulders with portentous power metal in The Aramchek Accusation, arthouse movie theme music alternates with cheesy 70s lounge band vibes in The Days Of Blue Jeans Are Gone, and Diagnosing Johnny sees the ghost of Beach Boys’ hits past possess both a Disneyland parade band and an experimental jazz outfit simultaneously.
