The Ocean drummer’s electronically focused solo project. Since joining The Ocean in 2013, drummer Paul Seidel has proved a more integral member than most among the German prog metallers’ rotating cast of characters. But like most of the musicians featured in these pages, he has more ideas on the boil than can be contained under one artistic umbrella. Hence this debut album from his solo project, Fern. The contrasts with The Ocean are immediately marked: where the latter’s last two albums have been themed around archaeology, Intersubjective sets its sights firmly on the near future, as electronic rock meets soundtrack-y noirscapes to evoke the rising claustrophobia of an increasingly digital yet alarmingly impersonal age.
