Long Distance Calling are back with their eighth studio album, Eraser. Bassist Jan Hoffmann and drummer Janosch Rathmer reveal how the fate of the Greenland shark inspired them to make their heaviest, proggiest and most diverse-sounding album yet.

Over eight studio albums and more than 15 years, German post-rockers Long Distance Calling have become the most successful instrumental group in their home country. Their last full-length, How Do We Want To Live? explored the relationship between humans and AI. It was the band’s first foray into a conceptual release, although 2018’s Boundless had a theme of sorts too: the many meanings of ‘freedom’. Boundless had marked their return to being an instrumental band after years with a vocalist, and without words to express a message, the quartet found that writing around a theme gave them valuable direction. “It means there’s a possibility to talk about more than just the music,” says bassist Jan Hoffmann. “It’s much more interesting if you find a nice theme or topic.
