Over the course of 13 studio albums (and counting), Opeth have grown both musically and stylistically. However, Prog never expected their bandleader to write anything with the title Funky Chicken! Mikael Åkerfeldt has dipped his toes into a wealth of genres for his first-ever soundtrack. Here, he explains the allure of creating music for Netflix’s Clark – a true-crime mini-series based on the life of Sweden’s very first celebrity gangster.

Director Jonas Åkerlund’s mini-series Clark, the story of notorious Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson, boasts a soundtrack created by Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt. Comprised of 34 wildly diverse musical vignettes, it represents the culmination of a friendship that began in the mid-90s, when Åkerfeldt’s band were gaining momentum and Åkerlund was causing a stir as video director to clients such as Madonna…
