Newly uncovered 1976 concert of cult Brazilian jazz/proggers.
When this Brazilian quintet were busily sifting through an engaging mix of native folk, rock, psychedelia and jazz in the 1970s, they did so under the baleful gaze of a military junta who mostly viewed non-approved music as tantamount to sedition. Opening with a parody of an army march, they push at those limits to subvert the military two-step with a raucous solo tenor sax. The band feature Wagner Tiso, whose keyboards make a decisive contribution across Wayne Shorter’s Brazilian-infused solo album, Native Dancer, recorded two years before this live show.
Unsurprisingly, Tiso’s supple playing is well to the fore on A Igreja Majestosa and the truly progtastic Armina, along with frantic guitar and rasping sax that sounds like an intense collision…
