SAN FELIPE, BC.- Después de formar parte de Green Peace, el capitán Paul Watson fundó Sea Shepherd en 1977, en Vancouver, para proteger y conservar la fauna marina. En 1981 migró a Oregon, Estados Unidos. En 2010 la organización ambientalista Sea Shepherd Conservation Society recibió una donación de 5 millones de dólares de Bob Barker, un famoso presentador de la televisión estadunidense, y otra por 1 millón del empresario israelí, radicado en Hollywood, Ady Gil. Según el informe anual de sociedades sin fines de lucro entregado a Washington aquel año, la organización obtuvo ingresos por 11.4 millones de dólares y activos por 6.4 millones.
