THE Merewest Community Foundation (MCF) launched an emergency evacuation plan book last week at the Merebank Tamil School Society Hall.
Premilla Deonath, its chairperson, said the aim was to empower the community.
“We want to be able to prevent a gridlock whereby vehicles go in one direction. This book was created for whenever there is a need to evacuate as a result of man-made or natural disasters.
“Our community, being a semi-industrial area, is regularly exposed to gas leaks and chemicals that affect the respiratory health of a lot of residents. We also regularly hear explosions and such things cause panic among the residents.
“Industry workers in the area have their own evacuation plans so we had to take matters into our own hands and create this book.”
