Given its predecessor’s huge success, FFVIII can often seem overlooked. Focussed on Squall as he meets a world-ending threat, some complex systems made this entry divisive. But for those who call it a favourite, it’s a passionate love. Like a lava-dripping Bomb, FFVIII oozes ambition, unmissable in the way it blurs the abstracted line FFVII drew between battles, exploration, and cinematics. “I loved the FMV cutscenes at age nine where the Robot Spider chases you,” says reader Bryan Neil Robson.
