Pixel art is often deployed to give games a retro feel but when used well it can do so much more. For its first game, Hyper Light Drifter, indie studio Heart Machine wielded the power of the pixel to give its 2D action adventure a darker edge. Somehow, it makes those tiny squares seem rather sinister. Static screenshots don’t tell the full story, which is that everything in Hyper Light Drifter feels a little… off. The jagged lines of pixel art are one reason why, roughly defining the world and its inhabitants as corrupted, or otherwise not quite themselves.
