Perfectly functional, but Ubuntu’s first phone makes a distinctly under whelming debut

PRICE SIM-free, €170 inc taxes (around £121) from bq.com (pcpro.link/249bqubuntu) Canonical first pitched the idea of an Ubuntu Smartphone in 2013 – but its campaign to fund the hardware via Kickstarter failed to reach its target. Now, thanks to a partnership with Spanish Smartphone manufacturer BQ, the Ubuntu phone is finally here. The result doesn’t feel like a particularly confident debut for the platform. The Aquaris E4.5 is a budget handset, costing around £121 SIM-free, and its design is as cheap-feeling as the price is low. The case is finished in a plain matte black, the edges and corners are awkwardly angular and the plastic feels thin and low quality, especially next to competing budget Android smart phones such as the Motorola Moto G 2.
