Facebook may be the biggest social network, but it’s seen many challengers – remember Diaspora and App.net? The latest is Ello, an alternative social network that lets users communicate without selling their data to advertising networks. It launched in March 2014 with a few hundred users, and although the service is accessible on an invitation-only basis, millions are now using it. We spoke to co-founder Paul Budnitz to find out why he created Ello. You’ve designed Ello to work without ads, so the focus isn’t on extracting information. How did that idea come about? Ello was founded as a private social network. We were tired of ads, and the idea that everything we posted was going into some data black box, and you can’t even look at what’s being collected about you.…
