Smart watches: a rising tide The sales of smartwatches to date might be explained in terms of awareness and desirability. With regards to awareness, many people I’ve heard talking about the Apple Watch are unaware that other firms make smartwatches. The press hype surrounding the Apple Watch is likely to benefit the whole market. When it comes to desirability, of those who are aware of smartwatches, many just can’t find enough good reasons to buy one. Many of the compromises that existed when I first considered buying a smartwatch in 2007 still remain. Apple’s big advantage is that its buyers are willing to accept or ignore those compromises (such as battery life).
