Google’s new network could be a force for good

It already sells smart phones, but now the tech giant wants a slice of the network pie

I’m not an adventurous traveller. A short budget ski holiday at Easter and a couple of weeks of camping somewhere in France in the summer is usually about all my family manages. Over the past 20 years or so, our annual trips haven’t changed all that much – we’re still skiing and camping; but my use of technology has mushroomed. I remember navigating with a map book, relying on public telephones to make calls back home; in fact, I could happily go a few weeks with no more contact with the real world than sending a postcard or two.
