It’s time to trust Windows users with their updates

If Microsoft truly is listening to users, then it should consider giving us control of our systems

Microsoft will soon start wrapping up the final code for Windows 10, and I’m interested to see what makes the cut. For the first time, the firm has been actively soliciting feature requests from testers, so if you’ve spent years clamouring for a particular feature, there’s a chance that at last it might actually make it into the operating system. Popular proposals in the Windows 10 Feedback app include tabbed Explorer windows and a cleaner, single-pane interface for network settings – but the change I really want to see is an end to automatic updates. For sure, it’s an idea that once made sense. In the bad old days, I used to support a network of desktop clients running Windows 98, and it was truly scary how vulnerable the infrastructure was.…
