Android on tablets is proving to be a problem child for Google, but that doesn’t mean it should ignore the issues and hope they go away

The sharp-eyed will have noticed one absentee from this Labs: Google. This isn’t because we forgot to ask the world’s fourth most valuable company to send us a tablet, but because it’s stopped making them. “Google’s HARDWARE team will be solely focused on building laptops moving forward,” wrote senior vice president Rick Osterloh on Twitter in June 2019, “but make no mistake, Android and Chrome OS teams are 100% committed for the long-run on working with our partners on tablets for all segments of the market.” This was after the beautiful but flawed Pixel Slate failed to match up to users’ high expectations of what a Google tablet should be, with one of those expectations being that it ran Android. What a shock to switch it on and find Chrome OS…
