ONCE A PON A TIME…

Here’s a quick summary of the technologies that Openreach will be deploying over the next decade.

GPON Gigabit Passive Optical Network The broadband technology being used by Openreach and others now. It uses time-division multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) to share a single fibre among multiple users, up to 32 in Openreach’s case. The technology is capable of 2.49Gbits/sec down and 1.24Gbits/sec up, shared between all users of that single fibre. XGS-PON 10-Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network Already starting to be deployed by Openreach when it lights up new areas, XGS-PON bumps the top speed up to 10Gbits/sec in both directions. It can co-exist with GPON on the same infrastructure thanks to WDM, meaning the broadband providers can offer a greater range of speeds to customers. 50G PON 50-Gigabit Passive Optical Network This is the technology used by Openreach in its Ipswich trial.
