Openreach’s director of network technology reveals Britain’s broadband future

The UK is now well acquainted with gigabit broadband – 83% of UK homes are capable of receiving gigabit speeds, according to Ofcom research published at the end of last year. But how much faster can we push our fibre networks? Turns out a whole lot faster, as proven by a recent Openreach trial. The networking arm of BT conducted a trial in Ipswich with Nokia that saw a home achieve download speeds in excess of 40Gbits/sec and upload speeds of just over 20Gbits/sec. How long will it be before we can all enjoy such speeds, and what on earth will we do with all the bandwidth anyway?
