Experts warn of increasing threat to the subsea cables that connect UK to the rest of the world

If you’ve ever lost your broadband connection because a local construction project sliced through the cables, you’ll know the disruption it can cause. Well, magnify that from a local to a national scale and you can understand why the government is prepared to send out navy submarines to ensure the subsea cables connecting the UK to the rest of the world aren’t sabotaged. That’s precisely what happened in November last year, when a Royal Navy submarine was ordered to surface close to a Russian spy ship called the Yantar, which was believed to be mapping the UK’s critical undersea infrastructure.
